Walking in Paris Opera Garnier to Rue Cler

After arriving at CDG early on a monday morning, we'll take the Roissy bus to Opera Garnier. I'd like to walk from there to our hotel in the Rue Cler area. It appears to be a 2-3 mile walk. Is it safe? busy traffic? passable walking with luggage? Any advice?

Don't. I'd use the metro (if you don't have that much luggage) or take a taxi. You will be exhausted from the time change and the last thing you want to do is lug around your luggage for 2 miles and read a map. En plus, you'll be passing Place de la Condorde and the Louvre---those aren't the most traffic free areas to be walking with you luggage. If there's more than one of you, maybe taking a shuttle would be easier than Roissybus.

I have to disagree with the above. Just walk down the Avenue de l'Opera, past Palais Royal, through the Louvre courtyard and over the Pont des Artes. You can avoid the Concorde that way, or just go through the Tulerie Gardens and over the bridge near the Orangerie closer to Concorde. If it's a nice day and you don't have much luggage, why not. Yes, it's safe and the sidewalks are wide for the most part. The Tulerie Garden walkways are dirt and tiny pebbles, so wheeled luggage might bog down if it's humid. There is some busy traffic as stated above, but a nice way to get to know Paris if you're not lugging a lot of luggage.

Lugging luggage? I guess this is why they call it luggage. I too vote for using the Metro to get as close as you can. From Opera, just take the #8 line to La Tour-Maubourg and start your walk from there.

Possible, yes. Practical, NO! Traffic is going to be your #1 problem. You'll be tired, dragging luggage, and trying to read a map at the same time. Not a good combination with Paris street traffic. If you really want to do it, go for it. But keep in mind where the nearest metro stations are and/or bus routes for when you change your mind.

Exactly, Sam. I used a linguistic tool to state how much I hate taking around luggage. I really do.

I would definitely walk unless you have a lot of luggage.

Thanks for your many thoughtful replies. You help me to think through the options. I know that a good walk is the best medicine for me after an overnight flight, but I don't know Paris well enough to predict the traffic snarls. Merci!

hi, if you dont mind the luggage in tow go for it. i do alot of walking when i travel to see what i woudlnt on a bus/train. i also have a chance to do alot of smelling of all of the AWSOME food everywhere in Paris and it give me an idea on what eats/shops are around or within walking distance. if you have a good map with you, i dont see how you can get lost. Worse case mingle with the locals and ask. Everyone i talked to over there was happy to help. whats funny was that i had tourist as ME for directions. Like im a native, yeah right and i have my Paris map in my back pocket. I think you will find it a great walk. also, probably during your walk, it will probably hit you - "YOU ARE IN PARIS!!!!" happy trails.

I would definitely walk too. Easy, beautiful walk. But then, I love to walk. Great way to start your visit. I'd follow Bets directions, or turn right off Ave de l'Opera onto rue de la Paix, walk through Place Vendome, right on rue de Rivoli, left at Place de la Concorde and across the bridge.

There's a Maison de Chocolat shop on Ave. de l'Operathen if you get tired, as Dina said, you can duck into the metro, but at least you'll have your first Paris chocolate.
