walking, hiking, trekking trips?

I'm interested in a walking vacation, probably more walking than hiking. I don't want to do any camping, maybe something similar to the "hut to hut" mountain hiking trips, but maybe more of a "pub to pub" trip, or "B&B to B&B" trip.

Anyone have any tips, recommendations, or experiences with a trip like that?

I'm interested in both recommendations for good locations or routes for that type of trip, and also tour companies that might organize trips like that; or hints or ideas for self-planning a trip like this.

I was thinking maybe between 10-15 miles per day, nothing too strenuous. Optimal would be something organized where luggage would automatically be shuttled to the next nights destination, but thats not absolutely necessary. Cities, towns, villages, countryside could all be acceptable.

How long is your trip? You might consider walking one of the medieval pilgrimage routes (originating in France) to Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, Spain. One of my art history professors walked it in 7 weeks.

We're planning to eventually do a "self-guided" walking tour through discoverfrance.com. You might find something through them that would interest you.

The UK is a great place to do this, and there are a number of companies that will provided self-guided walking holidays with accommodations and luggage transport. Take a look at the National Trails website:

http://www.nationaltrail.co.uk/

Explore the different trails, then Google one by name and you'll find websites for companies that will set it up for you.

You can find similar walking tous in Switzerland at wanderland.mySwitzerland.com. Many of the routes are through gentler terrain than th ehigh alps. The trails go from villge to village so you can stay in nice inns rather than rustic mountain huts.

The Pieterpad is a long distance walking route in the Netherlands. The trail runs 485 kilometres (301 mi). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pieterpad
Many of the hikers use the network of 'Vrienden op de Fiets' for accomodation: http://www.vriendenopdefiets.nl (Click English Version). Not only because it's cheap, but also because it allows them to meet all kinds of people, in all kinds of houses and farms.
