We will be traveling to France in late Aug./early Sept.
We are doing a biking tour with merlot travel company (self guided)in the Bordeaux area. Afterwards we will spend a little time in Paris. We would like to go to another part of France for a few days(by train) We do not like to be in the car. Any suggestions of a "home base" that we could do some walks/hikes (loops) and return "home" in the evening. any suggestions would be appreciated. I have not been able to find a web site link in Rick Steves France 2007 specific to walking.

Chamonix offers beautiful mountain scenery and a variety of trails at all levels (easy, moderate, strenuous). We spent a week there and enjoyed a different hike every day.
