My family and I (Teenage daughter, my husband and I) will be visiting Paris for 5 days. In order to keep in touch, I have purchased walkie talkies in case we get separated. I would like to know if they are really worth it, or if there are cheaper cell phones or anything?
The frequencies used by walkie-talkies here in North America can clash with emergency frequencies in Europe, so they aren't legal over there.
Look for a couple of inexpensive "unlocked" GSM cell phones and purchase a couple of pay as you go cards when you arrive in Paris.
Another option in case of separation is to pick a well-known spot nearby as your rendezvous point at a partcular time. Write down the name and/or address of the rendezvous so each can ask for help if necessary.
If they're the ones that use the US frs frequencies, they're illegal due to frequency spectrum allocation issues.
That having been said, I've used them a couple of times, but they're really not worth the trouble.
Paris is a simple town. Set a meeting point and a time and you'll be fine. My kids used this method way before electronics were invented and we never lost one of the scoundrels.
