Walkie Talkie

I'd like to bring a set of walkie talkies to Switzerland in case I lose my partner in the shopping mall, mountains, etc. Are they acceptable to use?

Thank you! I want to be sure. We used them in the Czech Republic with no problem. It was great! We kept in touch between 3 of our vehicles.

Sammee, as the others have mentioned, it's * NOT * acceptable to use U.S. walkie-talkies in Europe. The frequencies used here are the same as some emergency services in Europe and so a conflict could occur. In addition, they won't be licensed for operation in Europe so if you're caught with them they could be confiscated or you could be charged (or both)! Cell phones would be a better idea, but of course they present other "issues". Good luck!

I understand the problem of using USA sold walkie talkies. So how about buying a pair in Europe? You can purchase some really inexpensive walkie talkies in the USA so I was wondering if low priced ones also are sold in Europe. Or is it Swiss built walkie talkies at Swiss prices?

I could be wrong, but I do not think there is the equivalent of our family wavelength walkie talkies in Europe. I have never seen them, nor hear any of my UK relatives and friends talking about them.

I don't know specifically about Switzerland, but walkie-talkies are as available in the EU as in the US. I'm sure that a quick visit to any sporting goods store in Switzerland would provide you with a confirmation. In the worst case, you could take a little detour to France, and buy a set here: http://www.decathlon.fr/fr/searchProcess/~searchedText=walkie%20/~fromSearch=true/~language=fr/~filtersString=TYPE%3Dtalkie-walkie . Have a good trip.

Any electronics store or telecom store will sell them in Switserland, ranging from cheap to expensive (there are several available in the CHF 15 - CHF 30 range). Keep in mind though that in mountainous areas reception may be limited. EU frequencies apply in Switzerland as well. Would be too much of a problem if not, as Switzerland is surrounded by EU Member States.

People over here don't talk about or feel the need to have a walkie-talkie because they all have a cell-phone. Even little kids. Perhaps Sammee could just pick up a couple of cheap phones. You can get them here in Germany for 9.99 €.

Look at ebay in UK- http://www.ebay.co.uk/ or in France-http://www.ebay.co.uk/. There might be more in other countries, but this is two that are in EU area. You can buy walkie talkies, have them shipped to where ever you are staying the first night or to your home, your choice. They start at £5.50 a pair and go up.
