Has anyone ever spent any time in Visp? I'll be there for most of a week due to work and wondered what anyone might know about the town.
I only know it from driving through on the way to Zermatt. It looked attractive enough without being particularly notable. It sits in the Rhone valley, which itself is pretty scenic, but nothing compared to seeing the Matterhorn and Monte Rosa from Zermatt. So I guess, the only real recommendation I can make is take the time to go to Zermatt while you're in the area.
Visp is the bus and train hub to a lot of places. I recconmend visiting Visperterminen, which is just a short bus trip from Visp...they have some good hiking trails and some of the highest vineyards in Europe.....there is a small winery in that area.....try the Heidia wine....great wine......also by bus is Saas Fee, a nice mountain town with beautiful scenery......Zermatt is worth a visit also....lots of lifts that will take you up high in the mountains. Here are some links to help in your research: Visperterminenen http://www.heidadorf.ch/content/de_willkommen.html Winery in Visperterminen area http://www.jodernkellerei.ch/content/index.html Saas Fee and area http://www.saastal.ch/en/page.cfm/WillkommenSommer Zermatt http://www.zermatt.ch/en/ I have been to Visp a number of times...mostly just to do shopping...they have couple of grocery stores..Coop and Migros...I did all my chocloate shopping at Migros. There is a public swimming pool in Visp if you decide to take a swim...not too far from the train station. If you eat at a local resteraunt........try the racalette.....a delicious melted cheese dish with boiled potatoes.
Hope you have a pleasent stay.
