Would it be possible to go to Zermatt from Lauterbrunnen just for the day and still make it worthwhile? In September?

ronald yes it is, it would be a fairly long day and certainly worth doing in September. Take the train from Lauterbrunnen to Interlaken Ost change for the train to Spiez and there change for the fast train to Visp, final change there to the train to Zermatt. Train times and fares can be checked on the Swiss Rail website www.sbb.ch/en
It well worth going you would even have time to go either on one or other of the cable cars in Zermatt or take the Gonnergrat railway.

I would choose the Lauterbrunnen Valley and surrounding alpine villages ANY day over Zermatt. Zermatt is not bad, but Lauterbrunnen Valley is much nicer in my opinion.
