Planning a trip to Germany in Sept. 2010, want to see the Alps but not sure what town would be a good choice to stay for a few days to explore. (FYI want to stay away from Munich area because of Oktober Fest)
Hi Wendy,
Our favorite places to base in are Mittenwald and Ramsau (by Berchtesgaden).
So many possibilities for sights and day trips from either. Here are a few...
From Mittenwald:
Karwendelbahn in Mittenwald
Ettal Monestary
Garmish (and the Zugspitze, and a luge ride)
Innsbruck
Hall in Tirol
Linderhof Palace
Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau
Tegelberg cable car and luge ride (by Neuschwanstein)
Fuessen
The Italian border is about an hour away and the charming towns of Sterzing/Vipiteno and Brixen/Bressanone are pretty close to the border.
From Ramsau (or Berchtesgaden)
Salzburg
Konigsee (boat ride)
Jennerbahn cable car
Eagles Nest (Kehlsteinhaus)
Salt Mine Tours
Bad Reichenhall
Ludwig's Neues Schloss (Herrenchiemsee)
Zell am See
Hallstatt (and the Salzkammergut region)
Hope this helps.
Paul
Hi, Wendy. I asked a similar question last year. I followed Paul's suggestion to stay in Mittenwald and loved it. It's a very pretty town, easily walkable with plenty of stores and restaurants. It's nice and quiet, which we prefer. As Paul noted, it's convenient to a number of sights.
Our favorite town in the Alps is Garmisch. Favorite city is Salzburg. You'll probably enjoy any town you go to in the Alps! It's simply amazing...
