We plan to spend 5-6 days in Andalucia. Is it worth including a day-trip to Tangier and/or a stop in Gibraltar versus spending the time in Spain? Any comments or recommendations? Thank you.
Does the Tangier comment relate to current world affairs? Or is it just not worth the trip - RS has it with 3*s. Thanks for your reply.
In a nutshell with only five or six days: 1. Visit Gibraltar if it's withing striking distance (a detour to Gibraltar adds two hours to the more direct Seville - Granada drive). It adds even less if you start in Arcos or Jerez and are heading to Granada. You need about three hours there, so it would make it a fuller, more interesting day since the straight-line route is boring. 2. Skip Tangier. Period.
It comes from having been to Tangier a few times. It also comes from having spent a lot of time in the rest of Morocco. The two are not the same. I wouldn't slow down going to Morocco right now since I doubt if it will come unglued as the rest of the northern tier has.
I drove over 1500 miles through Morocco in January and (as usual) experienced no problems whatsoever. In fact, if anything, the traffic cops were LESS trouble than usual this year. It's a great place to visit. However ... a day-trip to Tangier is not really a good idea. You might as well go to the Morocco pavillion at the Epcot centre! Roger
Thank you both for your very precise replies; they were very helpful.
I partially agree with the previous posters. A day trip to Tangier is not the same as traveling extensively throughout Morocco. If you think you will travel there in the future I would skip Tangier. However, if you have no plans for such a trip in the future, I'd certainly take the day trip. Just because you can't do it all doesn't mean it isn't worthwhile to do a bit of it. And I certainly think a stop in Gibraltar is worth it. We enjoyed Gibraltar very much, and we did the day trip to Tangier as well. I found it interesting and different. I am glad we went even though I am aware that it may not be representative of the entire country.
Rick.. I agree that while Tangiers might not be representative of the rest of Morocco it was still very interesting for me and although I was fortunate enough to have time to travel to Chefchaouen & Asilah (both of which I loved) I still would have been glad to experience Tangiers. When I travel I try to decide what I will regret not doing...I am always hoping to return, but since there are no guarantees, I do all I think I want to while I am there. We left from near Jerez, but did not go to Gibraltar. Took the ferry from Tarifa.
