Visiting Munich-where else to go?

We are going to Munich in October for 4 days and have another week following to travel. Where would you recommend going within Germany or in neighboring countries to get the most out of our trip? Thanks!

Technically, Salzburg is not a part of the Tirol, which is basically to the south of Germany. Innsbruck is in the Tirol. See map of Austrian states.

Near Salzburg is Berchtesgaden, with a beautiful glacial lake (Königssee) and Kehlsteinhaus (Hitler's Eagles' Nest).

The part of Bavaria directly south of Munich is called Oberbayern. It's kind of the foothills of the Alps and has many lake resorts. You can get to it easily using trains of the Bayrische Oberland Bahn (BOB, really) that leaves from the Munich Hbf. Those trains go to Holzkirchen, then split and go to Bad Tölz, Tegernsee, and Schliersee.

Just west of there is Mittenwald, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, and Oberammergau, on one of the rail lines to Innsbruck, and Füssen (near the castles).

Farther to the west is a lovely area called the Allgäu, probably the best alpine area in Germany.

And, of course, north of Munich is the preserved medieval town of Rothenburg. Also worth seeing north of Munich - Bamberg, Würzburg, and Nürnberg.

With only a week, you realy don't have to get out of Bavaria. If you want to, for about €45, with a Bayern-Böhmen-Ticket and local tickets in the Czech Republic, you could go to Prague in 6 hours by regional trains.

Just outside of Bavaria, Ulm has the highest Gothic church tower in the world, and you can climb it.

A week to waste in Bavaria and Austria sounds like heaven to me. :)

Lee's given you some good ideas of places to go in Bavaria. Salzburg is a beautiful town, and the Salzkammergut region is just gorgeous.

Maybe a little more info would be helpful -- where are you flying in/out of? Are you taking trains or driving?

Thank you for all of the suggestions. We are starting in Munich and flying out of Frankfurt. Would love any other recommendations!

For into Munich and out of Frankfurt, I would save Rothenburg and Würzburg for the last few days. Take the train to Rothenburg and spend at least one, preferably two nights. After the second night, go to Würzburg to see Marienberg and the Residenz. From Würzburg it takes less than two hours by Regional Express (RE) to Frankfurt Hbf. If you get a €28 Bayern-Ticket at the automat in Rothenburg, it will cover your travel to Würzburg and then to Kahl am Main. At a counter in Würzburg, you should be able to get a P-P ticket from Kahl to Frankfurt Hbf for €7,15 pP.

you could do worse than take a look at a guidebook for the region. Any decent book will list out lots of places to go, things to do, places to say, where to eat. Or you could save the $15 and hope the best replies for how to spend a week on vacation (written by people who have no idea of what you like to do) show up in this forum.
