My husband and I will be visiting Vienna in August, and we would like to take a day trip to Durnstein, and specifically we wish to see the castle ruins. We will not have a car. I see that one can travel by boat, bus, or train; and travel independently or on a tour. What experiences have you had with this, and what do you recommend?
You can get a Kombi ticket and take the train to Melk, catch the boat to Durnstein jump off and visit the village and ruins then catch the boat down to Krems where you can catch the train back to Vienna. No tour needed for this. You can do an overnight in Durnstein (we loved it) as well. Stockingerhof is a great place to stay there.
