Visit Bautzen or more time in Berlin?

We have two days in Berlin on our trip. We are driving from Dresden and planning to make a quick 2 hour stop in Gorlitz. Is it worth an hour or so to see Bautzen on the way or should we just get to Berlin earlier and spend the time there?

Hi Deanna,
I haven't been to Bautzen but I'd vote for more time in Berlin!

Bautzen or Budisin (in Lusatian Serbian language) is certainly worth of stop. It is also a center of Lusatian Serbia where this Slavic language speaking minority lives. To learn more google Lusatian Serbia.

Hi Deanna. We were in Bautzen in 2005 and really enjoyed it. We had spent a couple days in Dresden and then drove over to Bautzen. It is an easy city to negotiate and there is a city parking garage in the middle of town next to a mall. We walked by the old city wall and looked at some of the old churches. We really enjoyed the Wendish/Sorbian Museum that has a great display of artifacts from the Wendish heritage and traditional clothing worn by the Wends during their festivals. If you have any interest in the Wendish culture, I think you would enjoy a stop there.

We stopped in Bautzen for about 2 hours to eat lunch and take quick walk around the sights. Probably could have used another hour or so. We were traveling by train from Dresden to Gorlitz. Stored our luggage at train station. I thought it was worth it. TI in the town center was helpful. We walked to and from train station-about 5 blocks. Could have saved time with taxi but I'm not sure if we saw any.

Thank you all for the info. I think we will stop for an hour or so. It sounds like a unique little town.

We stayed there as a base in Dec. 2006 for 3 days. Its is worth far more than an hour. It's famous for its towers, about 10-12 that surround the old town. The Spree river runs through as well. The Sorbian museum has already been mentioned and Bautzen is home to the Stasi Museum, the former east german secret police. It's quite a lovely town in our opinion.
