VISA Buxx for teen on EF Tours trip to France?

My daughter is going to Paris, Normandy and Brittany with her French club over April break, a trip she actually did with her family this past July. She already has a Visa Buxx card that she used on a previous People to People trip to the UK and Ireland, so we know that works, but for some reason EF Tours is insisting the students get an actual debit card linked to a checking account. Since our daughter did not use her VISA Buxx card while with us in France--why spend your money when you can spend your parents'?--we don't know if it works there.

Has anyone sent a teen recently to France with a VISA Buxx card? I really do not want to get her a debit card unless I have to.

For those who don't know, a VISA Buxx card is not a credit card--it's a card that you pre-load with money, sort of like a gift card.

My daughter used hers successfully in France. Perhaps EF Tours doesn't understand what a Visa Buxx card is. I got it for my daughter to take when she was away at school because I could load it within seconds from home if she needed it in an emergency. Interestingly, hers was from US Bank, and if you loaded the card from a US Bank account you had to allow up to 10 days for the deposit to appear! Since I loaded it from my credit union account, though, by the time she got off the phone she had access to the money. There is no better way to fund a kid at school. I think your daughter will be fine.

Actually, you could do both. She can use the money left on the Visa Buxx, but if they want her to have a debit card, go ahead and open up an account. I assume she's a junior or senior now, so she'll be headed off to college sooner or later. If you know where she'll be going to college, I'd suggest opening an account that is in both your town and the college town. But that's not really that necessary with the miracles of today's electronic banking.

She's only a freshman! She just has a strong interest in international travel. I would dearly love to know where she will be going to college in a few years--she insists it will be overseas--but we do have some time. Thanks for the advice about getting the debit card. We may have to do that anyway.

Hi Ashley! I did almost the same tour as your daughter as a freshman in high school as well. My parents sent me with a debit card, and a credit card. Both worked perfectly well! It was easy to pay with the credit card, and then get money from the debit account when I needed it. Tell your daughter good luck, I had a blast in France!

The fees for the Visa Buxx card depend on the card issuer, not Visa, so it's possible that different issuers maybe have different fees.
