Is the Viktualienmarkt open/selling goods mid to late March? I've heard so many people talk about it I was hoping it would be open and have a wide variety of things when my husband and I are there March 19th - 22nd. Are there other "supermarkets" in and around the Marienplatz?
Some department stores have grocery sections. There is a Galeria department store near Marienplatz that has a grocery section in the basement.
I am not sure about the season for the Viktualienmarkt. It seemed to me to be a combination of farmer's market, Biergarten and outdoor food court.
Regards, Gary
During our visit in Mid March 2006 or 2007 it was open. We arrived on a Sunday, and it was not open, but the next day it was.
Karen, google Viktualienmarkt" - it comes up in English at Muenchen.de. Looks like it's open year-round, closed on Sundays. I loved it. I also like the department store Karstadt across from the main railway station; it has a great grocery section on the basement level and a snack bar etc. It's also closed on Sundays.
As to variety of offerings - I bet there'll be lots of stuff, fresh fruit and flowers from the South of Europe etc., plus the usual cornucopia of veggies, meats, fish, beer, wine, pastries etc.
The Viktualienmarkt was one of my favorite places in Munich. There is a large grocery store in the Marienplatz subway station. There are several stores in the subway station and the grocery store is on the left when you are coming down the stairs from Marienplatz. Have fun! I love European grocery stores.
I'm not an expert on the VM (but, I did live in Munich for a while). It is a combination of stalls that sell fresh produce and, of course, before the veggies come in, those kinds of stands may not be open. But there are other businesses that sell things that are not seasonal - cheese, meats, herbs, etc. - that tend to stay open.
I think there will be enough going on to make a visit worthwhile.
