I've seen recommendations elsewhere for budget travellers to fly into Bratislava Airport as an alternative to Vienna. However, it looks from some searching as if the bus to central Vienna takes almost two hours. Are the fares from elsewhere in Europe really cheap enough to make up for that? Or am I looking at the wrong bus route?

That sounds about right, if you're headed to the center. The drive is at least 90 minutes, if I recall correctly. If the fare is very low, it could worth it for, if you have the time. It's just like flying into Bergamo for Venice, Katowice for Krakow or Girona for Barcelona...
