Vienna transportation passes

On the way to another destination my wife and I have a 30-hour stopover in Vienna. We plan to (1) take the airport bus to the city (we are staying near Schwedenplatz), (2) use the tram off and on the day we are there, including for the RS tour, and (3) take the airport bus back to the airport the next day (the buses will be more than 24 hours apart). Is there any type of transportation pass that will save us money over just paying for each as we go? Thanks for any suggestions!

If you don't get an answer here try the Tripadvisor Austrian board. There are a few residents of Vienna that are very good at this type of question: http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowForum-g190410-i146-Austria.html Do a search on Transportation Passes there will yield several threads, possibly your answer. We had a similar situation with a 3+ day stay. We arrived and left by the train station. We used a three day pass plus paid for our final trip with individual tickets. We used the subway frequently, especially as we had already paid for it and it was winter.

There are a ton of options. You will have no problem. At most U-bahn stations there are high tech automated machines that work on a "touch screen" basis. Select "English" and away you go! There are day passes, 48 hour passes, 72 hour passes, weekly passes, etc. These passes are good on all buses, trams, and U-bahn trains. Additionally, at magazine/cigarette kiosks you can usually buy strips of individual tickets at a reduced rate. One of the things I love about living in Vienna is its top notch transportation system. Trams, buses, trains run frequently and are clean and safe. Everything is on the honor system. One bit of warning, the airport is probably outside the central zone (zone 1) so you will probably have to buy an extra ticket to cover that.
