Vienna to Prague to Munich to Vienna

Looking to travel with family of 4 (2 young daughters) this June. Vienna to Prague to Munich back to Vienna. Wanted to see Neuschwanstein. I will have a car. Plan to take 8 days.

Looking for suggestions on where to stay in/or around those cities and about family excursions that would be along the way.

How young are the girls?

Near Neuschwanstein check out the Tegelburg Luge. Paddle boats on lake Forgensee (spelling?)

In Munich, the Deutches Museum has a 'hands on' section for kids -- physics you can touch.

In Vienna, the park accross the street from Schonbrunn Palace is a great place to let them burn off some energy.

Also Vienna, kids seem to love going to see the Strauss dancers waltz the night away.

Prague has a toy museum with an enormouse display of Barbie dolls.

Add this website to your travel library: http://www.travelforkids.com/main.htm -- it has some pretty good resources for some of your destinations.

I've never stayed in Prague nor Vienna since we've had kids. We stayed in the Pension Siebel in Munich (for its proximity to the pedestrian zone, price, and helpful staff, do note that they did not have TV in the large family room as of 2003). We stayed at the Alpenhotel Meier near Neuschwanstein (for price, clean, comfortable, restaurant on site).

Off your planned path would be Nuremberg. It has a Toy Museum with interactive exhibits. It's heavy on simple toys, like dolls and wooden trains. On Sunday afternoons until 4:30 p.m. kids and parents can play all sorts of board and table games in the playroom on the 3rd floor.

The girls are 5 & 10. By going back to Vienna it would save on airfare (roundtrip) and we could pass through Salzburg. But your point is good in that if 8 days are too tight to return to Vienna we could fly back from Munich

Thanks Steve and Jim.

You can still get to Salzburg easily even if you fly out of Munich. It's a short trip, once parked the city is very walkable. I know my young daughter really enjoyed the park because of all the statues of unicorns, dwarves, lions, etc. She also enjoyed feeding bread to the ducks swimming around in the fountain.

We took our two kids (11&7 at the time) to Prague, Vienna, Salz, Berlin, Dresden, Munich and Rothenburg this past May. Here are the things they loved: running through Mirabell Gardens, Boat cruise/pieces of the Wall/Reichtag/Ampelmann in Berlin, Hofbrauhaus/Glockenspeil in Munich, horse drawn carriage tour in Vienna and Charles Bridge/Astronomical clock Prague. We also went to Rothenburg and they loved the whole town and Nightwatchman and Hitlers Eagles Nest in Berchestgaden and they loved the snow up on top and the bus ride up. We also tried to build in lots cafe breaks so they could just enjoy being there. Good Luck and enjoy!! My kids really had a wonderful time. BTW, I taught them some basic German phrases and they loved ordering in German, and the people loved that they tried so hard :-
