Vienna to Prague, itinerary help

We are flying into Vienna in April 08 and departing from Prague 12 days later. I'm thinking of 3 nights in Vienna, 2 in Salzburg, 2 in Munich, 1 in Rothenburg and 3 in Prague, (in that order). Does anyone have an opinion if this is a good itinerary in that time frame. Also, my husband is afraid of heights, so mountainous areas are a little scary for him. We are doing all of this by train except we were thinking of picking up a car in Fussen and then dropping Rothenburg so we could drive the Romantic Road. Is that drive doable in one day and is it very mountainous? Thanks for any advice.

Having done this type of itenerary several times before I think that you have a very good plan.

I would especially encourage you to rent a car in Fussen and drive the Romantic Road, but do not drop Rothenburg. That is the highlight of the Romantic Road.

I would suggest stopping in Landsburg, Nordlingen and Dinkelsbuhl on the way to Rothenburg, and Creglingen and Weikersheim after Rothenburg on your way to Wurzburg. I would maybe suggest 2 nights in Vienna instead of 3, and one night in in Wurzburg to allow two days for sightseeing on the Romantic Road. Definately worth it.

The Romantic road is not mountainous except for a bit between Fussen and Augsburg. If you want no mountainous driving you could rent a car in Augsburg instead of Fussen. Just some rolling hills between Augsburg and Wurzburg.

Here's a great website about the Romantic Road:

Have a blast!
