Any tips or routes info for driving out of Vienna, going toward Bavaria. On May 4th, we are renting a car in Vienna, and heading towards Bavaria: Reutte or Fussen. Spending 3 nights there, and then driving up the romantic road to Rothenburg, to spend the night. Our last full day in Europe we will head back to Munich and spend the night for an early flight out. What would be the best route, and what sights should we see on the way? Also is 3 nights in Reutte/Fussen too much? We were planning on seeing the castles, and maybe day-tripping to Switzerland. Would 2 nights be better, and spend more time along Romantic Road?
Hi Jared,
While we have never been north of Munich or farhter east than Salzburg, but we have stayed in Fussen twice. 2 nights would give you just one full day and in my opinion, there is a lot to see and do in the area. Neuschwanstein/Hohenschwangau Castles, Linderhof, Tegelbergbahn (cable car and luge run) 1 mile from Neuschwanstein, Wieskirche (amazing!) as a start.
I believe Vienna to Fussen will take about 6 to 8 hours.
Sorry to get off topic here...maybe Vienna to Salzburg/Berchtesgaden (2 nights) to Fussen (2 nights) to Munich would cut down the time spent in the car.
In Fussen we stayed both times at Hotel zum Hechten. Great place.

I hope this helps.

There is a great deal to see in the areas that you are traveling and not that much time. It depends on what you want to see.
Salzburg is a beautiful city, picture perfect.
If you like mountain lakes, the Salzkammergut lake district east of Salzburg is quite beautiful. I liked the Lake and City of Halstadt.
The Danube between Vienna and Linz is an area long civilized and it shows it. The Wachau region, Melk Abbey and St. Florian Abbey were my favorites.
While I really liked Rothenburg, I am not sure that I would add it to this trip, just because it would cost you so many miles and hours to get there.
In the area of Füssen, there are 3 castles (Neuschwanstein, Hohenschwangau & Linderhof); the pilgrimage Wies Church and more beautiful alpine-lake scenery.
For your last night you might consider Freising just north of Munich and closer to the airport. It is an attractive Bavarian town with its own share of sights.

Switzerland is a little far away from where you are staying to make a good day trip. You may also want to consider Garmisch-Partenkirchen as a home-base for the Bavarian Alps. Although Fussen has Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau just down the road, there isn't a whole lot more to do in the immediate area. GP has a much better selection of restaurants and activities.
