Does the Vienna State Opera provide the dual English and German translations for all major operas? Or just some? (I'm looking at a Madame Butterfly performance this year.) Thanks for any information.
I've never specifically been to the Vienna State Opera, but at other opera performances throughout Europe, I have never seen the surtitles given in any language other than the native language of the city. And honestly... do you really need surtitles to follow the plot in Madame Butterfly?
It is best to call or email and ask if it doesn't explicitly say on the performance page. It generally varies on the performance, however, English and German subtitles have been the norm when we have attended the opera in Vienna and Prague.
While not completely necessary to follow the plot, my husband doesn't have much interest in going to the opera if there are not subtitles.
I attended the Vienna Opera in Sept. and the translations were in German and English. You press the button on the monitor for which language you want. This was in the standing room area, so I guess the expensive seats have it too.
