I am traveling to Vienna next month for 2 -3 days. We are doing a bicycle wine tasting tour on our free day but would love dinner recommendations ($15-$25 range)in Vienna - we are also thinking about a visit and maybe dinner at the Prater - any suggestions on this? we are also taking the train from Vienna to Budapest - if you have any advice or experience with this train travel let me know :) Thanks
Dawn,
A good place to eat is a Turkish restaurant called Etap. It is not far from the Opera and the owner is very nice. The train to Budapest usually leaves from Westbahnhof and can be crowded, depending on the day of the week and time you leave. Securing seat reservations might be in your best interests.
Don't eat at the Prater. The only restaurant of note there is the Schweitzerhaus which is overpriiced. Right near the Prater is a great restaurant called Gasthaus Hansy. They have wonderful Austrian traditional cuisine and are more reaonably priced. They also have great beer as well. If you want to try something in the Heuriger type restaurant go out to Nussdorf on the Tram to a place called Schubert Auerl.
I agree that the Prater is not where you want to eat. I am not anti-Schweizerhaus, but it is what it is... a big beer garden that serves thousands every day. Lately, I've been enjoying this restaurant in the first district... http://www.brezl.at/ I agree about reserving a seat to Budapest. Have a good trip!
