Vienna self-service laundromats-staying on Fleischmarkt

Hi Steevites heading to Budapest, Vienna, Salzburg and Fussen next month. Will run out of semi clean clothes in Vienna. Tips for locations of self-service laundries would be appreciated as well as any tips you have for anything you really enjoyed in any of those locations Thanks as always Mike

We stayed at the Hotel Austria on Fleishmarkt and we were delighted with the area. We splurged by having the hotel do our laundry a couple of times so, unfortunately, we have no advice on self-service launderettes (after a couple of trips to Europe we made the decision to trade the cost of hotel laundering, unless it was across or a block or so down the street from the hotel, for the time we could otherwise spend on those things for which we'd come to see and for which we'd spent a fair amount for air travel, etc, and had such a limited time to enjoy). As to location, depending on where you'll be located on Fleishmarkt, we found our hotel to be well-located. It was about four streets from St. Stephens, one of the principal landmarks of Vienna which is itself on the great pedestrian shopping streets of the city and which runs all the way to the southern end of the Inner Ring. We were also within two streets of the handy Schwedenplatz underground station from which one can reach almost any point in the city. Vienna has so much to see and is my second favorite European city after London. Highlights for us were the Schonbrunn Palace, the Kundeshistorisches Museum and the great Ferris wheel at the Prater amusement park (made famous by the film The Third Man).

Well Mike, save the laundry for Budapest. When you get to Budapest get a place to stay on or very near the Opera House on Andrassy ut. Not only is this the best location for starting to enjoy Budapest but it is also the best place to start off to the laundry service. From Andrassy ut walk up the right side of the opera. After about 30 yards the street becomes pedestrian only and on your right you will see a purveyor of Sausages. Go in the door and when the large bearded gentlemen approaches you just point to the sausage in the window. He will ask, HERE? In a forceful and intimidating voice. Say yes. Then he will slop it on a paper plate and grunt, BREAD? Again say yes and he will cut off a huge chunk of bread. MUSTARD!? Of course Mike, mustard. Now it's your turn to grunt, KNIFE to which he will dig around in a drawer for what was once a massive carving knife now ground down to a sort of prison shank looking device. Take your sausage and knife to the standup table just outside the door. Oh, grab a beer out of the refrig first and be sure to pay. After finishing one of the best sausages you could ever imagine while listening to the opera performers practicing on the second floor of the Opera House (no AC, open windows) continue in the same direction until you get to O utca. Note the bullet holes in the plaster of the building on the street corner (second floor); think 1956 revolution. Turn right down O utca and the laundry is in the first open courtyard on the left (same building as the Opera Apartment Hotel). Inside the door of the laundry you will see a wonderful woman who will greet you with a smile and tell you to come back at ...... Well usually takes half a day. (full svc, wash and fold, cheap) The entire trip excluding sausage break is about 5 minutes from the front of the Opera House. This is Budapest, life doesn't get better. Enjoy.

Hi, I came across a public self-service laundry in Vienna other than those facilities available at the hostel I was staying. What you're looking for is this: Schnell und Sauber Wasch Center on Westbahnstrasse 60, 1070 Wien. It's located across from the police station, 1070 is the same zip code where Westbahnhof (west train station) is located. No idea how far that is from where you are staying...closest U-Bahn station?
