How much time does it take to travel from Vienna center to the palace? Also, approximately how much time should I allow to take the "Grand Tour"? Should I allow time to check out the grounds, anything else of interest, at the Palace, as well?
Counting travel time from the center of Vienna, visiting the palace takes a good 1/2 day--and even more if you want to study every little detail. As I recall, traveling to the palace on public transportation and walking from the metro took about an hour. Walking around the grounds is worthwhile and probably adds 30 minutes or so to your visit. The palace is quite spectacular. However, if you've been to Versailles, and you're short on time, you could skip it.
If you are doing this in August, call and get a reservation. Rick gives phone # and details in his book.
It takes about 10 min on the U-Bahn (line U4 towards Huttledorf)Get off at the Schoenbrun stop and it is about a 10 min or less walk. No need for reservations if you go early in the morning (9 am) or later in the pm (after 4:30), that way you will miss the hordes of tour buses. Figure about an hour for the tour, but the grounds are magnificent, I went back three times to photo the grounds. You can spend hours walking the grounds, depending on your fancy.
Deborah, the grounds are very nice ... and the oldest zoo in Europe is on the palace grounds ... it's fun to walk up to the Gloriette, too ... there's a café up there for a nice cup of coffee/ tea and a great view of Vienna... Have a great trip! P.
