I'll try to find that information, but Ostbahnhof is East station, Suedbahnhof is south station. The map on Wienerlinien.at shows two S-Bahn stations, Suedbahnhof and Suedbahnhof/Ostbahnhof on separate S-Bahn lines just a block apart. There is actually a bus between them, but it's a short walk. An old picture shows a single building spanning the block, but I've seen Internet reference to the station building being demolished. However, the Wienerlinien website still shows connections coming into the "stations". Maybe they are now just "Haltestellen".

The Rick Steves book for Vienna indicates that dynamism prevails amongst the train stations while the new Hauptbanhof is being built. Here's what the book says: ...the Sudbanhof (south station...the locus of the new central station (a grand hauptbanhof) is mostly closed, though trains to and from Bratislava now run from a provisional Ostbahn section of the Sudbanhof. One of the three maps of the Wien Stadtplan shows the Sudbanhof on the Gertel south of Karlsplatz. According to the RS book, take Tram D to the Ringsstrasse to get to the city center from the Sudbanhof. The map seems to indicate that the SBahn is close by. I consider myself lucky--on my trip last year, I dealt only with Westbanhof on my ventures to Salzburg and Budapest. Best wishes

Barry, I passed by Südbahnhof in last summer 2010 when walking to the museum located in the area. It's all gone...Südbahnhof is demolished. It's a huge construction site. The Südbahnhof Ostbahn is nearby, just follow the signs. The trains that used to stop at Südbahnhof now stop at Meidling, unless you're going to Bratislava (Preßburg).
