VIENNA-MAUTHAUSEN-MELK CRUISE TO KREMS-VIENNA

I have read the guidebook and have a feel for the times it takes to do and see things. Just wondering if anyone has attempted leaving from Vienna to Mauthausen, seeing the camp, then go to Melk, take a boat cruise, then head back to Vienna in a day. Sounds like a lot to do in a day. Thanks

The last boat leaves Melk at 2:15 PM arrives Krems at 6:00 PM

So best case scenareo, you arrive in Melk at noon, get to the boat dock, buy your ticket, get to the abbey, buy your ticket, see the abbey, walk from there to the boat all in two hours.

So then the question is; can you arrange transport Vienna to Mauthausen, see it (in a meaningful way) and then arrange transport to Melk, all by noon?

I don't know about Mauthausen, but to do the abbey in Melk, then the boat cruise down the Danube to Krems (possibly stopping for bit in Durnstein) would take most of 11:00 AM to 6:00PM so I don't know how you would fit anything else in and transport, too.

we did a similar one day trip but in reverse. salzburg-mauthausen-melk-krems-vienna.(it took 5 train transfers and a river cruise) you will find getting to mauthausen a bit tricky involving local trains and taxis. it was all worth it though. good luck!
