Arrived in Vienna today. My husband left our RS book somewhere in the Munich train station. Feeling a bit lost. Got a diff book but it sucks. We are hoping to find another copy but srprisingly cannot so far. There are like 3top thing RS suggests doing at the palace I believe - what are they??? For that matter, what are the top rated to dos in his tours of Vienna?? Restaurants near the opera area would be helpful to. Going on a wachau tour on Monday, so any help by tuesday would be grand!!!
I was just wondering - are you staying in a hotel that was listed in the Rick Steves' book? I ask because it seems some of the RS recommended places we've stayed at in the past have had extra copies of his books laying around in the common areas for future travelers to use, or they may have a copy at the front desk.
Good luck!
If all else fails, a visit to the Vienna Tourist Office could help you.
Visiting a tourist office is a good suggestion. Last fall when we were in Vienna the tourist office gave us Riedel wine glasses--a very nice thing to get for free.If you go to Schonbrun Palace I would recommend their cafe/tearoom for a snack or lunch. Enjoy Vienna--plenty to see there.
Steve. Can you buy Rick Steves' books online and access them on a laptop?
Amy, the top 3 sections to see at the Hofburg Palace are: The Imperial Apartments, Treasury and Neue Burg (New Palace). Restaurants near the Opera that he suggests are: Cafe Restaurant Palmenhaus (modern Austrian cuisine), Rosenberger Markt Restaurant, Maysedergasse 2, tel. (self-service eatery), Ruckenbauer (fast food kiosk in a transit underpass under the street in front of the Opera), Kurkonditorei Oberlaa, Neuer Markt 16 (great pastries & daily 3-course lunches), Danieli Ristorante, 30 yards off Karntner Strasse opposite Neuer Markt at Himmelpfortgasse 3 (classy Italian). I'll check out what he top to dos are and get back to you. Just relax and have fun.
Don't miss Demel's on Kohlmarkt if you like pastries, chocolate etc.
Fantastic!! Thank you all!!!
Amy, just returned from a trip that included 4 days in Vienna. Restaurants: Danielle Ristorante has a gorgeous interior. It smells great, but I was disappointed by the food. I had salmon in a white wine sauce which was forgettable. My wife ordered a 1/8l glass of wine and was served double portion. At first, I thought it was a generous pour, until the bill came and we were charged twice the amount on the menu. We really liked Beisl Zum Scherer and returned a second time. It is on the northwest corner of Judenplatz, only about a 5-10 minute walk from the opera. If you are going to the opera and are going to get standing tickets, a little clarification from what I inferred from Rick's writeup. You can't save your place with a scarf in the ticket line. That occurs in the viewing area. You get in line, purchase tickets (one ticket per person so if two are attending, both must be in ticket line). Do not leave at that point. Go into the house and get your "standing spot". This can be saved by tying a scarf, belt, handkerchief, or whatever around the rail. You can then leave and return at any time, including during the performance.
I would suggest stopping at one of Steves suggested hotels. They all seem to have Steves books laying around for use by others.Even if it was 1 year old it would serve the purpose.
