WE are going to Vienna for 27-30 Dec after Christmas and wonder what must see itinerary you recommend? Or what to avoid during Holidays? Classical music? Christmas markets? Food to suggest? Hotels: any good locations to stay in or specific hotel ideas with good value/quality? Prague: we will be here from 23-27 Dec
Any key ideas for Prague?
2 years ago I got very good prices on 4/5-star hotels by bidding on priceline.com, Intercontinental in Vienna and Hilton East in Prague. The locations were good, though the Hilton was a bit away from the sights, they were easy enough to get to. The hotels were excellent.
Unfortunately, the Christmas markets in Vienna will be closed by then. The city will be taking a breather as it gears up for the big new years eve bash. Some suggestions: Take a tour of the Hofburg palace or Schoenbrunn. Many museums to choose from. Hang out in a coffee house and eat your weight in cake and chocolate. Go up to the top of Kahlenberg mountain for a view over the city if it is clear. Check out the website of the Vienna State Opera to see whats on offer. Not sure if the Spanish Riding School will be performing or not. Go up to Grinzing (38 tram) and visit some wine taverns (Heurigen). Even in the quiet time between holidays there are things to do. The temps are usually hovering around or slightly below freezing and the sun will set at around 4:00. So dress Warmly! Have a good trip!
Or you could take the train down to Budapest where the markets will still be open.
