Vienna--If not Karlsplatz, then H-Pension Museum?

I'd like to know if anyone has this impression: I read somewhere recently that the Karlsplatz area in Vienna is a big heroin junkie hangout. While we'll still see the sites there, if true then I don't really want to stay in that part of town and would prefer a more tame night life. Been reading up so much in anticipation of our vacation that I don't recall where I read that. But would like a second opinion. Separately--there seems to be little info on the Hotel-Pension Museum in Neubau District out there. I've found 2 reviews, and of course, one was good and one was bad, and both were 2+ years old. Any experiences? I know the location is right for us, but would like some reassurance that it's not musty & dingy.

We just returned from a wonderful winter trip to Vienna and Salzburg. We stayed at the Mercure Westbanhof. It was a great location. You can walk to the ring area or take trams/subway. You are across the street from the Westbanhhof trainstaion so you can do day trips! The hotel was nice, too.

Hi Tom,

We have experience with pleasant multi-night stays in these Vienna lodgings: Hotel Graben, Pension Nossek, Pension Pertchy... all of which you may research on the Internet. They are all within the famous "ring" and quite near one another.
Have a great trip ... Gute Reise! ... P.

No sure where you read that, but Vienna for us has been one of the safest and cleanest places we've gone -- all of Austria for that matter. We went there 3 times in 2006. Being down in the center of the city will be a real treat for you. Especially if you enjoy concerts, operas, shopping, etc... We didn't stay in the ring area -- we were just outside of that and walked in everyday without issue at all hours of the day. You still have to use good judgment for safety, but Vienna of all places is not where I feel the need to check for my wallet at all times. People were lovely and friendly and I've never been anywhere where street cleaners hand sweep all the streets then wash it down everynight.

I would not worry about Karlsplatz. We have walked through this area many times, day or night, without any problems or worries at all. As the previous poster mentioned Vienna is probably one of the safest cities in the world. A good hotel out near the Westbahnhof is the Fuerstenhof: http://www.hotel-fuerstenhof.at/default.htm
We have stayed there before and loved the place. If you are staying more than three days consider renting an apartment, which is what we do whenever we visit.
