Vienna Hotels

Hi! Does anyone have any good recommendations for hotels in Vienna? I will be there for 3 nights at the end of August. I'm looking for a nice hotel with a double room and private bathroom. I'll take any good recommendations or horror stories of places to avoid! I've been trying to find a list of places that Rick recommends, but no luck so far. Thanks!! Happy travels!

In several weeks I'll be staying at the Hotel Goldener Baer. I've stayed there before. It's not luxurious by any means. However, the location is great, and the street car is out the door. Save your money for Sacher Torte! Here's the link: www.goldbaerhotel.com

We stayed here on a Rick tour in June. It is ideally located (2 blocks from St. Stephens) and lots of good places to eat . . . especially the Opera Cafe right around the corner. The hotel is on the second floor and there is an elevator. They make wonderful arrangements for transportation to the airport if you need it and it is only 12 euros. Good breakfast.

I have stayed twice at Pension Hargita, just off Mariahilferstraße; it's a ten-minute slightly downhill walk from Westbahnhof train station, and right on the U-Bahn. The bus to Südbahnhof station picks up about a block away. It has several different kinds of rooms. Right above the street, but double-paned windows so noise is not an issue. Try their European-style breakfast for about €5 at least once. Plenty of places to eat, shop and bank on M'straße. Reasonably priced, in my opinion.

Do you mean that all Rick's recommendations are full? In 2004 we stayed at Pension Nossek and loved everything about it--everyone was wonderful and helpful too.
When all Rick's recommendations are booked up (which rarely happens to me because I one of those strange very early planners), I go on tripadvisor.com and take my chances. The few times I've had to use tripadvisor I've been pleased with my choices.

Kattie, we have taken rooms at Hotel Graben several times. It's a four-star establishment where every room has a private bathroom. The hotel is only a few steps from the famous shopping street called "Graben" (means 'moat, which it formerly was). Have a look at the photos at their web site...

We will be staying at the Ibis in Vienna. I read about the Ibis in one of Rick's other books. Since then we always stay in them in large cities. They are clean and neat and consistant and the price is right. They are part of the Accor chain. Take a look at their website. It might be different this year, but we find that we need a/c in the large cities. The Ibis has a/c.

Don't stay at Pension Nosseck...while the location is excellent..the owner is rude and the breakfast is terrible!

Kattie, I just returned from 3 nights in 90 degree weather in Vienna, and after the first night at a pension without AC, we changed to Courtyard Vienna Schoenbrunn, which I really recommend. It's a little south of main Vienna, but 200 meters from a subway stop that will whisk you anywhere in 15 minutes. The room was spacious, the only place we stayed in Europe with separate double beds. The bathroom was large and really clean. They offer a breakfast (too expensive for us), have a restaurant for dinner (a little pricey, but we ate there once), and have a small shop in the lobby as there isn't much to eat/buy around the hotel. But you are within walking distance of the Schonbrunn Palace, which had a restaurant and lots of food carts outside it. We got a good deal at Expedia (just a little over $100 a night). Look into it! I am so glad we ended up switching to this hotel.
