Would love to hear your favorite things to do in Vienna on and off the beaten track. will be there in September.
Thanks
Where to start...So much to do there, much depends on your interests. Let us know what they are so we can give better advice. For a start buy the 8 day transit pass for the excellent transit system. One thing to do that others usually miss is the monastery in nearby Klosterneuburg, they have an old altarpiece done by Nicolas of Verdun in the 13th c. You can take the S-bahn out there, visit the town and monastery, and be back in Vienna in a few hours. Or better yet you can rent bikes and ride up the Danube to the town...beautiful.
The Grinzig district for great wine, the Spanish Riding School, Hofbergcapelle and museum.
If you have any interest in horses (and even if you don't!), the Spanish riding school is a memorable experience.
sara,
vienna was my favorite place in all of europe!
one thing that may seem "touristy", but was one of the highlights of my trip there was a "danube river dinner cruise with entertainment".
if i lived there i'd spring for it at least once a month. i think it was around 32 euros per person, and you got dinner, a cruise up the danube,(and back), and some top notch music entertainment. the singers were superb and i still have dreams about the violinist! we booked this in september at the main tourist office somewhere near the ring road.
i wish i could remember just where, but any tourist office could book it. just make sure if you do to find out "which" boat you're booked on. there are quite a few.

Sara, if time permits, get a copy of VIENNAWALKS by J. Sydney Jones. Plan from it.
In Vienna, check with tourist information [in Opernpassage, for example] for evenings when someone may be performing Gregorian chants.
Baden bei Wien is only a short train ride away. Catch the Badener Bahn in central Vienna. Ask tourist information. You could enjoy a thermal spa there, for example.
In Vienna, an inexpensive underground experience awaits at Esterhazy Keller [take Naglergasse off Graben shopping street]. It's ancient and the wine there is wonderful.
There are organized tours of undergroud passages of central Vienna. Ask tourist information.
Figlmüller is a restaurant just a stone's throw from St. Stephen's cathedral. Arrive early for lunch - Wienerschnitzels are very popular (because they are so very good!).
Griechenbeisel is Vienna's oldest restaurant. Even Mozart and Schubert ate there. Great place!
Have a terrific time! P.
Consider taking a day trip to Melk and Krems. We took the train to Melk, toured the Abbey and then the boat back to Krems. We walked around the town, enjoyed a meal and then headed back to Vienna. It was one of the most relaxing days.
