I'm living in Vienna for an extended time. Anyone have suggestions for day trips (by train) outside the city? I've heard Baden, the Wachau, and I've already been to Melk and Mauthausen. What have I missed?
If you like wine, then you have to check out a tiny jewel in the Vienna woods, Gumpoldskirchen. We stayed at the Post hotel, ate at a nearby winestube and had a wonderful meal and a great time. Don't know about trains, we drove, but if you can get there it's fun. http://www.hotel-post-gumpoldskirchen.at/d/
Hi What luck! How about going to Burgenland, specifically to see Eisenstadt, esp. if you're interested in classical music? I also suggest Graz, quite doable from Wien Meidling.
Klosterneuburg, a beautiful, 900-yr old abbey about an hour outside of Vienna. The abbey runs a winery as well.
Thank you all! Any others? I'm really looking forward to spending free Saturdays around Austria.
Maybe not exactly what you are looking for because it's not in Austria, but Brno in the Czech Republic is only about a 2 hour train ride from Vienna and is a pretty cool place to check out. It's the CR's second largest town, complete with a castle and casemates. http://www.brno.me/info.html http://www.ticbrno.cz/uvod?lang=en-US
