Before you commit to a rental car, find out what the drop-off charge is if it will be in a different country. Reports here have noted fees of several hundred dollars.

Gak, I don't think 2-3 nights is enough in Bavaria, so much to do there! If you like hiking, I'd recommend Eisriesenwelt Ice Caves: http://www.eisriesenwelt.at/site/content/CB_ContentShow.php?coType=home&lang=EN The hike up here is great and the cave itself is pretty unbelievable. You hike for about 2o minutes, take a cable car, hike another 20 minutes. You feel like you're on top of the world by the time you get up there. Coming back down, stop at the restaurant just before the cable car that over looks the mountain, good food, good prices. On the way up to the ice caves, you will see Werfen castle, it's soo beautiful, here's the link: http://www.salzburg-burgen.at/en/werfen/
Another good hike we did was up above Neuschwanstien castle (cross Mary's bridge and hike beyond). We also loved the Ehrenberg ruins in Reutte. I liked Fussen as a home base or some of the other quaint towns recommended on this site (didn't care for Reutte at all, nothing special about it). Read my other post to find out more about Ehrenberg and Neuschwanstein. Feel free to ask me any questions! Happy hiking! Angela
