Vienna apartment recommendations / suggested day trips

Hi! My wife and I are planning a trip to Austria in July and based on our past travels, are really sold on renting a self-catering apartment in Vienna vice staying in a hotel or B&B. Was wondering if anyone has had a recent stay at a specific apartment that they could highly recommend, with a central location being a top priority. Also, if we stay for a week or more, can my trusty RS fans recommend their favorite day trips from Vienna? Many thanks....looking forward to your suggestions!

Check out the Rosa Linde B&B - they have 3 rooms; 1 with a kitchen and 2 without. It's located off Mariahilferstrasse. Their rooms have a quintessential Viennese feel!

Melk and the Wachau are the most popular destinations for day trips. I also like Graz very much, which offers a very nice old town and the Landeszeughaus, the largest armoury in the world. A real armory btw., i.e. weapons used by the people of Graz and Styria to defend their town and country.

K&T Boardinghouse is another great B&B to stay in. They now have a second location close to the original place. Best location in town, and relatively cheap. Tina and Kaled are great hosts, and friends of Rick Steves. They're online.

We stayed at Beatrix Walkner's Apartments Augarten. She is a wonderful landlady and the apartments were very nice. It s not exactly in the ciry center, but there is an Ubahn stop right in front of the apartments so you can be in the center of Vienna within 5 minutes. Many markets around the area for food shopping as well. Beatrix is very easy to deal with and does not have any "hidden" charges for the apartments. Her family also has a restaurant on the ground floor that is pretty good. http://www.appartements-augarten.info/ We have been staying in apartments in Vienna many times and found Augarten to be very well priced and well equipped. For further apartment hunting you can try Vienna Apartment Service (we use them all the time and have never had a problem). http://www.apartment.at/eng/ Day trips...depending on how active you are, a good one is to rent bikes from Pedalpower near the Prater and ride up along the Danube to Klosterneuburg. The ride is very nice and the Abby there is wonderful. You can ride further up and there is very nice scenery along the Danube as well.
http://www.pedalpower.at/ Take the train to Melk and take the boat down the Danube to Durnstein I really recommend an overnight there(stay at Stockingerhof right in the vineyards) Durnstein can be crowded by day but all the hordes of tourists are gone in the evening. You can also rent bikes and cycle down to Durnstein enjoying many nice villages and scenery along the way. You can return via train from Krems. Enjoy the wine in the Wachau, it is the best.

Another nice day trip s down to Gumpoldskirchen, below Vienna. Nice little wine village. Vienna is a city we have been to many times...first visit was about a week (with a biking journey from Aschach an der Donau of 5 days back to Vienna)in the city itself. Every visit after has been at least 10 days...still more to see, eat, drink, and do. People that tell you this is a 3 day city are clueless or in a big hurry. The Kaffeeehauser, Heurigen, and myriad of wonderful restaurants is incredible. I won't even begin to mention all of the museums, art exhibits, and music venues the await you.

Dawn, James, Martin, David, and Alex: Thank you so much for your very helpful information. My wife and I tend to revisit the places we've been and loved...I guess you could say going with a "sure thing" - but this year we've decided to go somewhere we haven't been before. Your descriptions and advice are really whetting our appetites!

For an amazing apartment in Vienna, try Pension Sacher. The apartments look right onto St Stephen's - the view is absolutely incredible. Look them up on Tripadvisor - the reviews are stellar and totally deserved. We stayed in a studio overlooking the church for about 160 US per night.
