Vienna and Salzburg in late Nov.

Hi, me and a friend were considering a trip to Vienna and Salzbug in late November but after giving it some more thought I'm beginning to have my doubts about this trip due to weather conditions. Has anyone traveled to these areas during this time? Are most things open? Is it foggy and rainy during this time? Several years ago me and this same friend made a fantastic trip through France and Italy but when we were in Chamonix (in Sept)it was so foggy that we could not see over the roofs of the buildings and it was like that the entire time we were there. I don't want to repeat this experience. Thanks, Andy

We traveled near Salzburg three times in recent years - late November and early December. In 2008, we had rain. In 2009, we had mostly sunshine. In 2010, we had snow and cold. The weather is pretty unpredictable. If you time it a little later, you can have the benefit of attending the Christmas Markets. We like it in this season, but some may not. We will be in Salzburg and Vienna the first week of December. Regards, Gary

We were in Salzburg right after Christmas last year and it was pretty warm. Vienna was cold on some days and not bad on others. Hard to make a call for when you are going. Christams Markets will be up and running in late November, main one at the Rathaus in Vienna will open Nov 17.

I agree with what has been said. Weather can be very changable in November. I've seen it gray and drizzly. I've seen beautiful sunny autumn weather. I've seen snowfall that didn't stick. Days will be short (sunset around 5:00) and likely frost in the mornings. On the bright side everything will be relatively tourist free and most everything should be open. If your trip falls at the very end of November (within Advent) the Christmas Markets will be open, which is cheerful and fun.

I was in Salzburg in late October 2010 and there was already snow predicted for the next few days. Since we were driving, we headed north. Then last year, I was in Salzburg the first part of December and there was no snow, just cold. In other words, one just cannot predict the weather. Last year, I lugged around boots for the snow in my carry on luggage and didn't wear them once. Yes, it would drizzle now and then but, in my mind, it was perfect. I was in Germany and Austria enjoying the markets and drinking Gluhwein! Enjoy your trip.

Hi Andy, We made a trip late Nov. 2010 to Salzburg, Innsbruck, etc. specifically to visit during the Christmas Markets. We had 4 days with some light snow, pretty cold at night (1 night beyond cold), but would do it again (and hope to). While we've been to these places before, during this time of year they were magical. Don't know how else to sum it up. Paul

Andy,
While in Vienna, if it is cold, make sure to enjoy some nice hot Gulaschsuppe and have a couple of Fiakers to drink. That will warm you up plenty. At the Christmas Markets indulge in some Punsch...after a few of those you won't notice the cold.
