Vienna and Salzburg

Am leaving in a week to spend 2 weeks in these areas.I have a few general questions--I read about free concerts and music everywhere. Any idea where to go to hear this everywhere music in these two cities?
In Vienna, any tips on a fun, lively heuringer to go to-Love Strauss and dancing. I read about watching performances but where can we dance?

I would try the TI in each city. They would have the most up to date info.

Reg has good advice. First stop should be at the TI. Tell them you are looking for music performances and they can give you a lot of choices. Don't forget about church performance schedules but I think they'll be included at the TI.

I don't know when ball season begins/ends in Vienna but they have a lot that may be right up your alley. The TI can tell you if there are any and where to rent a dress.

Kate, if you're lucky your visit to Salzburg may coincide with their Oktoberfest, which I think is the 4th weekend of September. We were there 5 years ago and had a great time.

Oktoberfest lasts two weeks and ends on the first Sunday in October.

Ball season doesn't start until the Christmas holidays.

At this time you will have a blast going to one of the many Oktoberfest-like celebrations all over Austria (primarily smaller towns). When traveling through towns, look at the posters announcing a Waldfest, a Burgfest, an Erntedankfest, the x anniversary of the local fire dept, community (Gemeinde), or just about any occasion, usually on weekends. Austrians love to party and all these are free events (just calorie-laden). Check prospective local official websites for upcoming events at this time. Usually these are the town name, followed by .at

Many Heurigen at this time (they operate on a rotating schedule, so your favorite place may not be 'ausg'steckt').
