I have been traveling solo through Europe for two months, using Hotwire to book hotels as I go. While I haven't yet had a bad hotel, I also yet haven't had a hotel with that has that Old World Feel. My final two weeks will be in Vienna, Austria, and my plane leave from Paris, France. Any help in locating hotels with more marble than glass and sheetrock would be welcomed.
Try the Hotel Chopin in Paris, which is in a charming nineteenth-century shopping arcade. One quick warning that it isn't in a "touristy" area (although perfectly safe and in easy reach of major sights) and some Americans think the bathrooms are primitive.

In Vienna over by the Westbahnhof is the Fuerstenhof. Not super expensive, but has an old turn of the century elevator and great high ceilings. Very good breakfast included and staff are fantastic.
Not old feel but an awesome place to stay right next to the cathedral and super nice family run it. Incredible views and a super location. Pension Sacher
We stayed at Hotel Astoria in Vienna in May w/ ambianc e of old world. website shows hi rates but w/ expedia we scored a vg rate. Walk to everything w/in the ring, marble bathrooms , old world elevators too.1.5 blocks from opera. maybe it will work for you.
Hotel Saint Jacques in Paris (5th arrondissement, Latin Quarter, close to Notre Dame) has the Old World feel. We had a room with a balcony which we liked a lot.
In Paris, the Grand Hotel de Champagnie in the 1st is very Hotel du Charm and you cannot beat the location. http://www.hoteldechampaigneparis.com/index.php In Vienna we've stayed in The Hotel Pension Neur Markt right off Stephansplatz. http://www.hotelpension.at/neuermarkt/index.htm Now, it was a few years ago so have no idea if it's still as good. Both would probably meet your criteria.
In Vienna I have a recommendation for a hotel where I have stayed on two trips. It is the Hotel Das Tigra in the historic center. The main hotel building is historic and was at one time an appartment building. The Mozart family lived there when he was a boy - see the plaque in the lobby. They also have an annex next door that is more modern. I prefer the original building for its ambience. It is moderately priced and within walking distance of most of the main sights.
I can second the recommendation for Hotel Astoria. My wife and I live in Vienna and we have friends visiting in October and he asked me to check out the hotel. Very old world charm and in a great location. We also checked out the Hotel Kaiserhof which is a Best Western, but you would only know it from the sign. It is in the 4th district but still very close to Karlzptalz and the downtown area and a little cheaper I think, but still very nice and lots of old world charm. Dirk
