My family has 2-3 days in Switzerland after Christmas in Lucerne, before heading to northern Italy. With a Flexi-Pass, we can go anywhere, but I'm in a quandary about spending one night near Montreux (to see Chillon and experience the French culture) and one night in the Lauterbrunnen area. I hate the one night thing, but I'm wanting my teenagers to see a bit of it all. We're trying to get to Lugano so that the train supplement to Milan where we pick up a car is the least amount. Any suggestions for me to consider?
Laurie- thos e are both great places - just got back from the Berner Oberland. Berner Oberland is great with 2-3 days - but if youre going there in winter and not skiing, you might find it beautiful but tough for hiking (a great idea with the kids - but in spring/summer/fall!) The french part DOES have some great things like the Chillon, and over the hill - is Greyer Castle and town - also great! The local french ski areas have a great train ride up the hill above Lake Geneva where you can visit Santa if the kids like that - and take a dog sled ride in the ski areas Villars town up there. Its an old train and scenic ride. But in Dec - you may be better off along the lake vs high up in the alps. Save it for next time and stay a few days up there in warmer weather!
