We are looking for a very cheap (inexpensive) and clean hotel near the train station in Munich for November. Any suggestions?
Also, I wouldn't dare go to Europe without first checking the 'Travelers' Helpline for information and suggestions.
"Very cheap" is a relative term. Can you give us a price range? We always stayed at the Kurpfalz, but it was about 15-20 min walking from the Hauptbahnhof. You may want to use the "search helpline" instructions that are in bold on the "To the West" screen and search for the answer to your question as this has been asked multiple times. Good luck!

We stayed in the Creatif Hotel Elephant in Munich last May. It is a few blocks from the train station and very reasonably priced. The hotel is painted in bright colors, clean and has a very nice breakfast included in the price. If you google the name you will see it. I think we booked through venere.com which, by the way, is good way to find hotels in Europe. We love Munich and have been back 3 times. Be sure to go by the Hofbräuhaus. It's fun and inexpensive. Have a great trip.

Why does it have to be close to the train station? The metro runs through the train station to many nice places...MUCH nicer than the seedy train station area.
Marienplatz is just a couple of stops away and a very good inexpensive hotel at the Viktualienmarkt is the Hotel Am Viktualienmarkt.
We, also, stayed at the Hotel Am Viktualienmarkt in 2007 and agree that it is a great hotel and priced well. Being close to the Viktualiemarkt is a nice location and this is easy to get to on the Sbahn.

Don't know what very cheap means. Please be more specific in future writings. Try the tourist class hotel: Hotel Ludwig opposite the train station. Read reviews on tripadvisor.com and review the hotel's web site for specifics. Stayed there with 23 family and friends. Clean, staff friendly.
Try Hotel Uhland at http://www.hotel-uhland.de/enwelcome.html. I can highly recommend this hotel…10 minute walk from Hauptbahnhof…20 minute walk to Marienplatz. Rates for a double with shower begin at something like €81.
EDIT: Indeed, the rates will vary for this hotel just like they do for hotels everywhere. As I recall, I paid about €90 for a double in July when I was there. Oktoberfest will be over by 10/4, so you won’t need to worry about higher rates due to the festival. There may be something else going on in the city…who knows? The hotel’s response to your e-mail inquiry will answer questions about rates. "Very cheap" is somewhat subjective.
The least expensive hotel I have found in downtown Munich (and it is near the train station) is Hotel Royal (www.hotel-royal.de). I almost stayed there a few years ago, but realized that I wasn't going to do anything in town and opted for a less expensive hotel in the suburbs.
A double at Uhland starts at €81 but might go as high as €190, depending on whether anything is happening in Munich. Uhland is very close to Theresienwiese, Oktoberfest site.
We stayed at Hotel Monaco for six nights back in May. It's about a block south of the train station. The neighborhood does look a little seedy but we never felt as if we were in any danger. Christine Sevdas and her staff were very friendly and maintained a tidy, peaceful little oasis on the fifth floor of a non-descript building. Our room was comfortable and the breakfast was plentiful. We paid 83 euro per night for a double with bathroom & shower. The price included breakfast.
