Versailles - Paris

We have an auto and must determine our best overnight options for visiting Paris. We would surely prefer to stay in Paris near the Eiffel Tower area, however locating safe parking seems nearly impossible. Is Versailles a practical location for lodging and using the RER to Paris during each of our two or three day Parisian visit? Any other options that might be better are appreciated.

You can compromise by choosing a hotel near the Peripherique, the ring-road highway defining central Paris. Newer hotels near a Metro station may have parking and will certainly be closer to Paris attractions than staying in Versailles and riding the RER. The Accor chain has many Paris hotels and some of the brands, such as Ibis, do offer parking at their locations just outside the Peripherique. http://www.accorhotels.com/hotel-directory/gb/europe/france/paris/paris-hotel.htm No doubt other chains will have competitive deals.

Hotels near Orly airport have parking. However, the Orlyval trip into Paris is costly if you are doing it twice a day for multiple days. I do not know where you are from. If Europe, this may be your car. You also do not say where you are coming from and where you are going. If this is a rental car and there are other locations in France/Europe, it might be worth considering multiple rentals, turning in the car before you Paris visit and renting another when you leave.

It's about a 30-40 minute ride on the RER from Versailles to Paris. And there are 3 train stations in Versailles, so if you can find a hotel with parking near one of them, it'll be fairly convenient. La Defense might be another option and is a quicker ride into central Paris on the RER. The hotels there are more likely to be business class type hotels, but might have parking.
