Versailles on a Saturday

We are planning on visiting on a Saturday to take advantage of the fountains. We will already have a museum pass. To pay the extra charge for the fountains, does that mean we will have to wait in line with everyone in order to pay the extra charge? Do we lose the advantage of the museum pass entrance?

The lines for the gardens/fountains and palace itself are separate so you aren't giving up privileges at the palace, but yes you will have to wait for the gardens. I was there in July, however (think it was a weekday) and the line took no more than 5 minutes.

Sarah is right, you can buy tickets to the gardens as you enter them, takes only a few minutes. Pay attention to the fountain schedule, they only run for a short time and different fountains run at different times. If you don't have the schedule, just follow the hoardes from fountain to fountain.

If you will be visiting Versailles from Paris I suggest you consider a bike tour. We took a bike tour last June with fattirebiketours.com and saw so much more of Versailles than we would have on foot. I realize you may just be going for the fountains which are magnificent but if you have the time and are interested in seeing the Trianon, the Petit Trianon and more of the Versailles grounds, a bike tour is ideal.

You can also rent bikes in the gardens at Versailles, you don't have to go on a tour. We do this every time we visit (I've lost count - we love Versailles) and it's very fun. Just want to make sure you know that Versailles' gardens and palace are way more crowded on weekends and especially on fountain days. We went on a fountain day once, never again.

The bike suggestion is a good one. I walk a lot but Versailles was crazy with the amount of walking needed to really see the grounds.
