Versailles-Chantiers train station

I will be close to the Montparnasse station and plan on using this station to get to Versailles-Chantiers station.

My question is: are there taxis at the Versailles-Chantiers station to get to the Palace? and are there taxis from the Palace to get back to the train station?

My other question is: I have difficulty using the audioguides/ipods. Are there any written information when you visit inside the palace?

Thank you.

Thank you Steve-

Do you know if there are taxis waiting outside the palace if we choose not to walk back to the train station?

As I stated, we are close to the Montparnasse, by the time I start changing trains or going directly to the train station that take you to Versailles-Rive Gauche (which I would have to at least walk the same distance as Versailles-Chantiers to the Palace or take a taxi)it would not be any easier...

Hi Joan-- we went to the chateau in 2007, and I remember the train station being VERY close to the chateau. Just follow the crowd, and you'll be there in 5-10 minutes.

We did the audio guide, so I'm not much help for your other question. You might look into a written guide online, perhaps in a tour book, then you can have it with you when you arrive in case there isn't anything on site.

I think Rick has a walking tour in his Paris book, but I could be mistaken.

yes there is quite a detailed chapter in Rick's Paris quidebook. I am going to Paris next year so am reading it as we speak. It is well worth the purchase of the book. Also has great details of other museums like the Louvre and so on.

Sorry I can't answer your question about the taxis. I would estimate the walk at 10-15 minutes. We got the audioguides last summer (which I thought I typically liked...) but for some reason I wasn't enjoying those (explanations were too long, perhaps?). My son had his iPod touch, and had downloaded the Rick Steves Versailles tour "app". I really liked that! I just read the information from the screen. Could dodge other people in the rooms to see what I was reading about and could go at my own pace-read everything or move on. I don't think there were written signs (other than names of rooms perhaps), and I don't think we were given any written material, but maybe I missed it.

Erin and Kathy-

There are several stations that go to Versailles. The one you are thinking of is the Versailles-Rive Gauche station.
This Versailles-Chantiers station is the furthest and about 1/2 walk.

Someone else will have to tell you first-hand if there are taxi ranks at Versailles-Chantiers and at the chateau, but I would be surprised if there weren't.

You can avoid the need for a taxi altogether if you take metro line 4 from Montparnasse-Bienvenue to Saint-Michel, walk through the tunnels to the Saint-Michel Notre-Dame RER station, and take the RER C to Versailles-Rive Gauche. Be aware that the RER C line divides on the west side of Paris. Be sure to get on a train that is going to Versailles-RG.

i know i can take the RER - by the time I get to the nearest RER (20 minutes) that goes to Versailles-Rive Gauche or do it the way you suggested, I might as well do it straight from Montparnesse and find transportation to the Palace.

I think I read somewhere about buses but I cannot seem to find it - I still prefer a taxi.
