Versailles. Can I buy tickets to get in once I get there?

Is Versailles open on Wednesdays? And can I buy tickets when I get there? I tried to buy online but it only showed tickets for this weekend and I wont be in Paris after Thursday. Anyone have any experience with going to Versailles?

Hi Melissa,
You certainly can purchase them at the Chateau, but you'll wait in line (a big one). My advice is to get a Paris Museum Pass (assuming that you're going to see other sites that it covers) in Paris, then head out to versailles and skip the line, going straight into the chateau. I picked mine up at Invalides (no line) which was close to where I was staying. The passes are available all over Paris, though, so check what's close to where you're staying.

Melissa, My advice is to not go at all! Sorry. I was there the first week in June and I think it's absolutely crazy with poorly managed lines and crowds. There are other chateaus to see in France. My advice to anyone is to pass on Versailles altogether. I just don't think it's worth it. Renee

What Darren said.... It's an iconic site. Of course you're going to want to see it. Yes, there are other places you might grow to appreciate more and the crowds can be annoying. But you're in Paris and you want to see Versailles. Get a museum pass.

I bought my tickets right at the little convenience store in the train station as you exit. It saved me a lot of aggrevation of standing in the main line. I'm sorry, I don't recall if there was a service fee for that. It must have not been enough to deter me if there was. I went mid week too with people who have been on the weekends and they said it was 10 times better. To me it was completely worth it, especially the gardens. I hope you go!

If you really want to see it, go for it. Get a museum pass, plan the spend the whole day there (at least the daylight hours), and be well rested. Be glad that you re not going on Sunday. We did, and it was a rookie mistake for these two seasoned travelers. Rick is right about Sundays at Versailles!

Melissa ,, as Darren said a Musuem Pass is a good idea,, and just a two day pass will be worth it, you can see Versailles, skip lines there, and Orsay and Louvre, and a whole bunch of other stuff. normally i don't push the pass, but it is great to skip the lines at Versailles. Versailles has alot more history to it then many other palaces so if you are interested in that sort of thing skipping it is unthinkable to me.. I accept that there will be crowds at alot of the popular sites, i don't think people should obsess so much about that,, it means a place is somewhere that is worth seeing to alot of people. Its like going to Rome and skipping the Vatican cause it might( will be) crowded.. sure there ARE other churches,, but its not the same thing. Its apples to oranges.

Thanks for all your replies, I did go today and loved it. (: And I know there are other Chateaus here but I wanted to see Versailles cus I've been interested in the French Revolution and Marie Antoinette since before I could remember. It was worth it to me. To each his own they say.

Glad you went. Out of our 4 days in Paris our day at Versailles was my daughter's favorite. It is pretty amazing!

I'm glad that you went, Melissa. Versailles is one of my favorite places to visit while in France. I'm even building a replica of MA's Hamlet (one building) for my daughter on my property, minus the garden, of course...
