Versaille with teens

We are traveling with our 3 teens to Paris this summer and wondered if you had to buy tickets to get into the only grounds of Versaille. We want to rent bikes and see only the grounds, not inside the chateau. Would you recommend going through Fat Tire bike tours rather than risk not having bike rental available inside the grounds in June?

Kathy, no you don't have to go through Fat Tire( although I do recomend them, your kids will love the whole experience with them, but it does add up to alot money !!) You will not have an issue with getting bikes on the grounds,,they rent them by the 1/2 hour,,so people are coming and going with them constantly,,i have been there several times in summer( busy ) season and have never seen them"out of bikes". You can also rent them in town,,and I have seen that recommended, but can't direct you to where to do that myself. As I said, the FT tour is great,, but not neccesary,, and with 5 people it would be a very expensive daytrip!

Thank you! Do we need an entrance ticket just to walk or ride the grounds?

I just grabbed my Rick Steves 2012 Paris guide of the shelf and it says that "The Gardens are free, except when the fountains blast and then the price is 8 euro." It looks like in the summer the fountains run on the weekends and on Tuesdays. Sounds like fun!!
