My wife and I are thinking of breaking our Venice to Salzburg train trip next Ocober with a day/night in Verona. Any hotel and activity suggestions?
I really liked Verona. We almost skipped the coliseum because we were going to Rome later. This one was much better because it is still used rather than a ruin. Walking through the old parts of town was outstanding. I skipped the Romeo and Juliet balcony because it's fake and a tourist trap.
If you are driving either a rental or lease be sure to opt for a GPS system to get directions. Nothing is labeled well in Italy, even the tollways give directions to unknown towns with no N,S,E, or W. You will lose a lot of time finding your way.
I can't give a good recommendation on hotels. We had three kids in tow. We stayed at the Hostel Villa Franchiscetti (spelling?). It wasn't one of our best experiences. There was a cheese festival in town and the place was packed. We couldn't get the family room and had to sleep in separate boys and girls dorms. Water pressure was low. The whole place had seen better days. It wasn't horrible but it won't meet your needs.
