Verdun-Baumholder-Frankfurt

Ok, we found some good frequent flier miles with a direct flight home from Frankfurt. We want to explore the battlefields at Verdun. Then we will be flying out of Frankfurt. My brother is stationed in Baumholder. ( We are spending the first part of the trip in London( 4 nights), Paris( 1 night) and Normandy ( 4 nights) That would have us leaving Normandy on a Friday across toward Verdun..staying??? Then Saturday all day in the Verdun area. Then ??? We would be flying out of Frankfurt on Wednesday. There is a possiblility of my brother and his wife joining us at some point. However, they will have a 2 month old ( part of the reason so I can see it!!!) so we might just be visiting them at Baumholder. I'm not sure how to budget the time. The original plan was to fly into London and fly home from Paris. But the flights home from Paris were awful and this way we can see my brother and his family. Any thoughts? I will be traveling with my 16, 14 and 8 year old. and hubby. My boys and dh are HUGE war buffs and we've studied WWI AND WW II this year if that helps. Christine

I have a total of 15 days for this trip. My boys want to see all of the beaches and museums of D-Day. We could do a couple of days in Verdun. But then I have several days left over that I'm not sure what to do with. Christine

You'll need a car (or a guide with a car) for the Verdun area...esp. if spending some serious time there (I'm envious!).

Yes, we are planning to rent a car when we go to Normandy. It looks like we will go right through Amiens which is right by the Battle of Somme, so I found a bed and breakfast that has a section that will fit a family of 5! It is 2 from Rouen, so that will be about halfway to Verdun. So we'll take a tour around there for a day and head to Verdun the next day. Christine

Baumholder is close to the Mosel river valley, the Saar river valley and the Rhine river valley. In downtown Frankfurt you can visit the former headquarter of the US military in Europe, which is now a university building (also known as IG Farben house as which is was built by the Nazis). There is plenty of WW2 history along the Rhine river...
