We are going to Italy and from Venice we are going to visit friends in both Zurich and Munich. We will have a Eurail pass but wondered which route would be better for us to take. Thanks for your help!
In March of 2010 my parents and I took the train from Venice to Munich, it took about 8 hours while changing trains in Verona. It was so scenic and a beautiful train ride. We stayed in Munich for 3 days and used one of our nights there to stay in Zurich which was about a 4 hour drive. Zurich is linked by the autobahn so getting there won't be a big hassle.
I'm not sure where else you are going, but for Venice to Munich to Zürich you don't need a railpass. With sufficient advance purchase you can get tickets for ECs from Venice to Munich and from Munich to Zürich for €39/p for each leg. You can get that fare online from the German Rail (Bahn) website. There is one direct EC leaving Venice at 13:34. There are four more ECs direct from Verona to Munich, every two hours starting at 9:02. For this connection you'd need an additional Italian Rail ticket from Venice to Verona. There is a 4 hour EC direct to Zürich leaving Munich around 12:30.
Brendon - thanks for the tip. So what I am understanding from both of you that it is better to go from Venice to Munich and then to Zurich, than to go from Venice to Zurich and then to Munich.
Lee - thank you so much for the tip on the EC. I will get on that right away!
