If you manage to get caught by the Inquisition, they'll eventually take you there for free.

Seriously, if you are moderately fit, take the opportunity to walk. It's only about a mile and a half to get there and on the way you'll get a great view of Castello D'Angelo, etc. Rome is a city that can best be discovered by foot.

It's actually an easy walk which we took from our apartment in Campo dei Fiori to the Vatican.

We will be touring the Vatican all day. We plan on walking the there but in case we needed a break, I was hoping a bus would go there.

I can tell you that after touring the Vatican all day - I was in no position to walk one more block. We hopped a cab to the Spanish Steps that day. The cabs were lined up out front of St. Peters. I don't recall it costing more than 15 Euro maybe.

Trying to give something back. We've gotten so much help on the board here.

I absolutely have to agree with these 2 posts:

We walked EVERYWHERE. We would take the buses when necessary, and occasionall the metro. We averaged 3-7 miles a day, and loved it! If you can do it, you will have the same experience.

We had an apartment on Via Emmanuelle http://www.palazzo-olivia.it/ (Corso Vittorio Emanuele II). The owners/managers were great. We had a small problem with electricity and they immediately saw to it. I discovered by just sheer dumb luck walking around early one morning that the apt. was about a block and a half from Campo de Fiori. It's not far at all from Piazza Navona, literally just a few blocks. If you can, try to make it to from Campo de Fiori during the weekdays. That's when all the vendors are there. On the weekends, it's totally different, but is still fun. There are many eateries, pizza joints, gelato spots sprinkled around the area. It's a blast.

Have a great time! Hope this helped.

Hi Mike--We also were very tired after walking around the Vatican. So even though we walked almost everywhere, we did take a cab home from the Vatican. There is a taxi stand at the opening of St. Peter's Square, and there is a taxi stand at Largo Argentina; the ride will be cheaper if you are dropped at the taxi stand rather than having the cabbie wander through the tight streets (alleys, really) around the campo. You'll have a short walk from Largo Argentina to Campo dei Fiori.
