Van rentals in Bayeux

I am taking my children and grandchildren to Normandy where their grandfather hit a beachhead DDayplus 1. Was thinking of taking the train from Paris to Bayeux and renting a van; there will probably be 10 of us; Is there a more economical way to do a van rental? Or do you suggest driving to see the area rather than a train and picking up the van in PAris?

Note that President Obama is supposed to be going there in June so expect nightmare issues (hotels, security, etc. as what happens every time a US president travels anywhere.

As to a van rental, call SCAUTO in Bayeux. They are the local Renault dealer and rent cars. I rented a car just two weeks ago from them.

Marilyn,

There is a car rental agency in Bayeux, but not sure whether they would have a 10-passenger van. You could also have a look at Caen, as there would probably be a greater selection in a larger city.

Another option you might consider would be to take the train to Bayeux, and arrange a tour of the beaches. BattleBus is the overwhelming favourite by many of the posters here, however as I recall their Vans are designed for about eight passengers.

When were you planning to take this trip? Keep in mind that this year is the 65th Anniversary and I've already spoken to people that are having trouble finding accommodations in the area at about that time.

Happy travels!

I just checked the Auto Europe site. The largest van I found, the Citroen Jumper, seats nine people. It's only available by special request. All the other vans seat eight people. I suggest that you call AE's US toll-free number and ask if it's even possible to rent a ten-passenger van.

The Europcar site lists a nine-passenger Mercedes van.

Thanks everyone! This is my first try at this and I appreciate all of the very good input and advise. This is fun! I am trying to get everyones' schedules organized our first choice was last wk in June and 1st in July....next choice would be the same but Aug and Sept. If any of you are intersted, I know a wonderful French man who has dedicated his life to finding and recovering any of the aircraft that crashed in Normandy and then he located the family of the pilot to send info and photos.
Thanks again for your information; it is invaluable to have it first hand!
