We're spending 4 nights in Muerren, and have been to the area before. I remember somebody on the helpline mentioning that there was a trail from Grindlewald into one of the glaciers. Rick doesn't mention it in the guidebook. Anyone out there know anything about this?
Thanks Michael,
For some reason I thought there was an easy hike along the valley floor directly from Grindlewald. The link you sent me says the hike is 3 1/2 hours. A little more strenous than I'm willing to undertake. I appreciate the help though!
I haven't done the hike, but the Lonely Planet guidebook has a brief description of it. The impression I got was that the hike was a bit of a tourist trap. The portion of the trail over the glacier is privately operated and one had to pay a fee to hike it.
I don't know about the Grindelwald glacier hike, but there is a hike from Gimmelwald which is sometimes referred to as a 'Glacier hike'. It isn't really, as it goes to the Firn (Glaciers are more densely packed ice structures) at Kilchbalm http://www.gimmelwald.ch/english/activities/hiking.htm#nr1 describes the hike, there are a couple of good photos of the firn and river at http://apriha.com/2007/11/13/kilchbalm/ . That hike is (from memory) not very strenuous and definitely closer to Muerren.
Hope this is related to what you were looking at.
