Using TSA locks in Europe

Does anyone know if it is ok to use our TSA locks in Europe air travel? Specifically, Spain and Germany. We'll be flying smaller planes in Spain and though we meet the requirements for "carry on" luggage in the US we think the planes in Spain might be smaller and make us check out luggage. I wondered if we can lock our checked luggage if needed.

TSA locks are only for US security. Some have reported that the European security in some areas have the TSA keys but would not count on it. We use the nylon cable ties to secure our bags. That way, if cut off, nothing of value (a few pennies) is lost.

I have used locks (and they happened to be TSA locks because I was coming from home) on intra-European flights and there was no problem. I'm leaning toward using wire ties next time, though, because it seems like a simple solution.

My husband suggested cable ties as well. So, we'll take cable ties just in case we have to check our luggage. However, I think I'll still take the TSA locks to lock our backpack zipper together so thieves can't get easy access to the contents. Thanks

Once I'm out of the US I use regular locks. Never had a problem.

The problem only occurs if they want to open your bag. Since 99.9 % never get opened, it is not a problem. If you are the .1% they the locks will be cut off. In all of our travels only one bag has ever been open. Have no idea why.

In our past 4 trips to cities in Europe, We had used TSA lock and it was ok. We're planning to use it again this time. Hope it will still be no problem to use it. Not sure what was the cable ties that was mentioned here.

In 5 trips to Germany, our bags were opened 3 times.

"In 5 trips to Germany, our bags were opened 3 times." - by the US TSA, or on flights IN Germany? I've done a fair amount of travel, and the only time my bag has been opened has been by the US guys.

Keep in mind while in the US that TSA does not always have a key to the TSA locks at some US airports. Otherwise why would they ask you to unlock your carryon suitcase when they work for TSA. Every checked bag that passes through the El Paso, TX airport is search. If there are missing items from your bag or damage items in your bag from a TSA inspection you will have very little luck on consideration. Just food for thought. Edwin

In a gazillion trips, I've never had anything pilfered. TSA notices show up in about twenty-five percent of our checked luggage. I've never used any kind of lock/tie.
